Custom Rustic Furniture by Don McAulay Sr. & Jr.
Custom rustic furniture builders Don McAulay, Sr. & Jr.
This father and son team specialize in refined rustic furniture such as birch bark case pieces and select twig mosaics. They also design western barn wood décor, and install unique rustic interior elements. Each piece is handcrafted to be used as functional heirloom-quality furniture, and is intended to meet the client’s needs by working together during the design process. Traditional woodworking techniques are commonly used in this rustic furniture, such as mortise and tenon joinery, dovetail drawers, and veneering. To ensure the beauty of your rustic furnishings, hand-rubbed tung oils are applied to the hardwood tops, and quality urethanes are used to preserve the branches and bark. Our selective harvesting methods allow us to use all portions of the raw materials including the tree roots and bark. Selecting the wood to use greatly depends on how the raw material has aged after being air-dried and also how that particular species will hold up for the intended use. Many of these pieces are fashioned with golden birch, maple, cedar, salvaged barn timbers, figured live-edge hardwoods, willow saplings, bark, river stone, acorns, and pine cones.
